brief: Design an inductive battery pack combined with a flexible phone stand, supporting the brand’s first step into consumer electronics
UAG proposed an extension into electronics, extending their core business in handset accessories to more technically complex products. I developed the external batteries with a simplified appearance, compared to expressive (and fashion-driven) phone cases. The key physical functional detail, the stand, is highlighted with anodized aluminum.
ideation kick off
I asked trusted design colleagues for sketch input as a first round of exploration, as freelancing can be an isolating process without the natural push and pull of a creative team.
analogous solutions
Adhesive phone stands and holders help inform the geometric guidelines for handheld use, portrait and landscape positions. Finding the right proportions that also house the internal components is a puzzle!
Families
The team chose a softened rectangle, to house all the components necessary for 4000w battery. Rounded edges left room for portrait and landscape orientation. I created “stand” directions, giving us better understanding of the size, balance, and styling implications.
Flexible use
With a smooth outer profile the closed battery stays out of the way of users. The adjustable stand with integrated hinge allows for the phone to continue charging while in landscape or portrait orientation.
The pack has received positive reviews, especially for its stand functionality and fresh appearance, and is available in 4 colors! It launched in Winter 2023.
